The workpiece in on-centers cylindrical grinding is mounted between the head and footstock centers. This effectively provides a single point mounting on each end of the workpiece, permitting maximum accuracy to be achieved in the grinding operation.
The angle and finish of center holes in the workpiece is extremely important. The results of a cylindrical grinding job depend on these factors.
Center holes in the workpiece are often precision ground to the correct geometry by a center-hole grinder (Figure L-116). Locating the center holes (Figure L-117) and producing the correct angle (Figure L-118) are critical operations in center-hole grinding.
Because a large proportion of cylindrical grinding is done on heat-treated parts, the center-hole grinder is especially useful for removing
heat treatment scale and leaving a precise locating surface.
