Performing Drop Test Analysis solidworks simulation

To perform a drop test study:

  1. Create a drop test study. Right-click the top icon in the Simulation study tree and select Study to access the Study dialog. Define the Properties of the study to select a small or large displacement formulation.

    Large displacement solution takes much longer time but is more accurate. Large displacement is used by default for linear materials and it is always used if you have a nonlinear material in the model.

    You can perform drop test analysis on solid parts and assemblies only. Shells are not supported.

     

  2. Setup the study. Right-click the Setup icon and select Define/Edit.
  3. Define result options. Right-click the Result Options folder and select Define/Edit to specify solution time parameters and locations at which response versus time graphs will be available after running the study.
  4. For assemblies and multibody parts make sure to define the proper contact settings.
  5. Mesh the model and run the study.

    When the drop test starts running, the program generates extra contact elements around the model surfaces. These contact elements, which are based on the mesh information, are used for contact analysis during the drop-test solution. The contact elements increase the number of nodes and elements of the original mesh. The solver dialog reports the updated mesh information.

    If you run a study before meshing it, the program meshes the study automatically before running it. You can also request to run the study by checking Run analysis after meshing in the Mesh PropertyManager. Running a drop test study can take a long period of time due to intense computations.

     

  6. View results:
    • Double-click an icon in a results folder to display the associated plot.
    • To define a new plot, right-click the Results folder and select the desired option. You can plot stresses, strains, displacements, and deformation.
    • To list results, right-click the Results folder and select the desired option. You can list stresses, strains, displacements, and contact/friction forces.
    • To define a time history graph, right-click the Results folder and select Define Time History Plot. You can graph stresses, displacements, velocities and accelerations.
    • To generate a report, right-click the Report folder and select Define.
    • To probe an active plot, right-click its icon or right-click in the graphics area, and select Probe.

    When you run a study that does not have any result folders, the software creates the folders and plots specified in the Result Options for the study type. If result folders are present, the software updates the existing plots.
