CUTTING FLUIDS

Cutting fluids should be used when machining most metals
with high-speed steel cutters.
A cutting fluid cools the
tool and the workpiece. It lubricates, which reduces friction
between the tool face and chip. Cutting fluids prevent rust
and corrosion and if applied in sufficient quantity, will
flush away chips. Thus, cutting fluids will increase production
through higher speeds and produce better surface
finishes.
Most milling with carbide cutters is done dry unless
a large constant flow of cutting fluid can be directed at the
cutting edge. An interrupted coolant flow on a carbide tool
causes thermal cracking and results in subsequent chipping
of the tool.
