Like much of the equipment found in the machine shop, grinder chucks are precision tools and deserve the same care and handling you would give your precision measuring instruments. With reasonable care they will maintain their accuracy over many years. Observe the following precautions when using grinder chucks.
Step 1 Carefully clean the chucking surface before mounting a workpiece.
Step 2 Be sure that the workpiece is free from burrs.
Step 3 On a magnetic chuck, be sure that small parts span as many magnetic poles as possible to ensure maximum holding power.
Step 4 Deburr the chucking surface from time to time (Figure L-83).
Step 5 Check the chucking surface with a dial indicator if the chuck has been removed and reinstalled on the machine or a new chuck is being used for the first time. It may be necessary to “grind in” the chuck before it is ready to use for precise work (see Section L, Unit 6, for details)
